How Tencent’s sweeping new facial scans will catch Chinese kids playing past curfew
Tencent, the biggest game company in the world, is rolling out facial recognition technology that will likely scan many gamers’ faces every single evening, aiming to catch minors breaking a gaming curfew and help prevent video game addiction (via Gizmodo). That’s a lot of controversial concepts in one sentence, no?

Here’s what’s going on, according to the company and China games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad.

In China, video game addiction prevention is literally the law of the land, one that’s been evolving for many years but recently hit some important milestones. In 2019, China introduced a law that banned minors from playing video games between 10PM and 8AM or from playing more than 90 minutes on a weekday. And as of June 1st, 2021, every game in the country is required to add a new authentication system that checks a player’s Chinese national identity (including their age) to help block underage players from going past those limits, all in the name of preventing video game addiction.
Tencent had actually already been using Chinese IDs for a couple years now, among other attempts to curb addiction, but the company tells us that underage players kept finding ways to get around them — like using their parents’ accounts.

The so-called “Midnight Patrol” facial recognition system is an attempt to check that an “adult” is actually an adult. It launched July 5th in over 60 mobile games, including the hits Honor of Kings and Game for Peace — aka China’s more patriotic version of PUBG. The facial recognition system is only for China and only for mobile games, the company confirms, so PC games like League of Legends are currently exempt. It’s all part of the company’s ongoing “Balanced Online Entertainment System” initiative, Tencent tells The Verge, which also encompasses its “Parental Guardian Platform” and “Healthy Gameplay System” designed to let parents know what their kids are up to and remind users when they’ve played for too long, respectively.

According to Ahmad, whose firm Niko Partners sometimes works with Tencent, here’s how the facial recognition part of the system operates: “It will essentially detect if the person playing the game after midnight is doing so for a long time or spending a certain amount of money in the game, and it will tick a box in Tencent's backend and prompt the user to verify their identity through facial recognition, either through that database or through a database they’ve already used,” says Ahmad.

Tencent says it doesn’t store any of the new scans itself; instead, it sounds like it’s building on China’s already-established state facial recognition surveillance system, and any scans Chinese users will have already given Tencent. Ahmad says all of Tencent’s games in China use WeChat IDs for login, and the “Midnight Patrol” can use China’s national citizen database of face photos to check against as well. China’s surveillance engine has also been used for more troubling things, of course, like the country’s human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims.

Riot reveals 2021 LCS Championship will take place in New Jersey, with fans allowed
For the first time in over a year, League of Legends fans will finally get to watch some of their favorite North American pros in person under the bright lights of a stage.

Riot Games has officially confirmed that the 2021 LCS Championship will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Fans and press will be allowed at the venue too, Riot announced.

Previously known as the Summer Finals, the LCS Championship will take place from Saturday, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Aug. 29, where the final two best-of-fives of the season will play out. The lower bracket final will happen on the first day of festivities, followed by the grand finals the next day.

The start of the postseason is set for Saturday, Aug. 7. The top eight teams from across an entire year’s worth of competition will vie for an LCS trophy and the right to represent NA at the 2021 World Championship in China. The region only has three slots and there are plenty of organizations aiming to attend the tournament.

The Prudential Center is the home of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and can hold up to 19,500 fans in attendance. The arena has hosted multiple concerts and sporting events, as well as the Rocket League Championship Series S7 Finals in June 2019.

Riot is “strongly [encouraging]” anyone who wants to watch the games live to make plans for vaccination against COVID-19 before attending the LCS Championship. Additionally, by purchasing a ticket on the LCS’ official website, fans are agreeing to comply with all federal, state, and local health and safety protocols when attending.

We’re still only halfway through the 2021 LCS Summer Split, but the idea of being in the stands to watch the best teams in NA battle it out to decide who will be the region’s next champion should get fans even more excited for the end of August.

Nintendo Switch OLED
Nintendo on Tuesday revealed its Switch OLED model, the long-awaited upgrade to its hybrid console. It'll be available on Oct. 8 -- the day Metroid Dread comes out -- and will cost $350, or $50 more than the original. As of Wednesday morning, Best Buy and GameSpot had product pages for the new Switch, but you can't preorder just yet.

UK retailer Game has it up for preorder at £310, while Australia's EB Games has it for $539, but Nintendo hasn't announced official prices for those countries.

The 7-inch screen is slightly bigger than the regular Switch model's 6.2- and the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD screens, but the new model's organic light-emitting diode display will offer more vivid colors and crisp contrast. It also features a wide adjustable stand (compared to the original model's flimsy kickstand), a new dock with a wired LAN port, 64 gigabytes of internal storage and "enhanced audio for handheld and tabletop play."

It offers the same 4.5- to 9-hour battery life as the regular Switch (the Lite lasts 3 to 7 hours), and uses the same Nvidia Custom Tegra processor. It weighs 0.93 pound (420 grams) with Joy-Cons attached, compared to the regular model's 0.88 pound and the Switch Lite's 0.61 pound.

It'll be available in two color variations -- one with white Joy-Cons and a matching dock, and the other with neon red and blue Joy-Cons and a black dock. Your old Joy-Cons will also be compatible with the new model.

Nintendo's reveal mostly lines up with a Bloomberg report from earlier this year, but is missing one feature -- the ability to output at 4K to a compatible TV when docked.

UK and Australian prices weren't announced, but $350 converts to about £255 or AU$465.

Warframe trailer teases its long-awaited new expansion being revealed this weekend
Warframe's big TennoCon fan convention (which is online only this year because of Covid-19) is happening this week, but ahead of the event Digital Extremes revealed the biggest news of the show: The New War expansion.

First announced all the way back in 2018, The New War has been one of the most highly anticipated updates to Warframe. It's believed to be the next big chapter in Warframe's bizarre and fascinating story, with the evil Sentient robots launching an all-out invasion into the Sol system. It was originally supposed to release in 2019 but was pushed back for reasons that aren't entirely clear—likely related to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic and poor reception to Warframe's controversial Railjack update which added a new mode where players piloted large ships in hectic space battles. Digital Extremes overhauled Railjack earlier this year (it's so much better now), which means the way is now paved for this next big update.

The trailer, which you can watch above, doesn't provide too many details on what The New War will be. But it's also hard to ignore the shot at about 30 seconds in, with a massive Sentient spaceship landing amid the wreckage of the Orikin Tower that overlooks Cetus, the human village on the edge of the Plains of Eidolon. Players will remember that the 2019 trailer also showed Sentients invading a grassy savannah not unlike the Plains of Eidolon, so I'm guessing that's where most of the action will be taking place.

We won't know for sure until this Saturday when TennoCon kicks off. Digital Extremes is promising to debut the gameplay for The New War expansion, and if previous years are anything to go by you can expect a pretty wild showcase full of weird and hilarious surprises.

TennoCon 2021 starts on Saturday, July 17, at 12:30 pm ET. The whole day will be dedicated to different Warframe presentations, which you can read about here, but the main event won't begin until 5pm ET whenwe'll see The New War in action among other major updates.

TennoCon 2021 can be watched on Twitch.

Every Game Featured at Sony's July 2021 State of Play
Sony held its July 2021 State of Play livestream this afternoon, though it was a relatively low-profile event considering Sony skipped E3 2021 last month. Arkane Studios and Bethesda's Deathloop was generally pushed as the big game to look out for, amongst other indie and third-party titles. Sony had preemptively dampened fans' hype by confirming games like Santa Monica Studio's God of War: Ragnarok and Guerrilla Games' Horizon: Forbidden West would be absent.

Considering Horizon: Forbidden West got its own dedicated State of Play event not long ago, it's possible the God of War sequel will receive one as well down the line. However, for now, Deathloop and an assortment of other games took center stage for the 30-minute showcase. Here's everything that appeared at the July 2021 State of Play.

Moss: Book 2

Polyarc's Moss is a VR puzzle-adventure game released in 2018 that caught many peoples' attentions thanks to its adorable protagonist, Quill, and storybook world. The newly revealed sequel, Moss: Book 2, led off Sony's State of Play event. Book 2 promises to continue Quill's story as she explores the hexed castle of the Arcane, and aims to stop a tyrannical ruler who wants to unmake the world, according to a Polyarc press release. The trailer shows her taking to various environments and collecting new items to aid in this quest, including a large hammer.

Arcadegeddon

Developer Illfonic is best known for its asymmetrical titles based on existing horror properties, including Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds. Its next game, a "flashy multiplayer shooter" named Arcadegeddon, is billed as a brand-new IP. It features alien-looking characters battling solo or in co-op to take on hordes of enemies in a futuristic world with a "90s punk rock" influence, and looks stylistically similar to Velan Studios' Knockout City. The game is available in Early Access starting today.

Tribes Of Midgard

Tribes of Midgard debuted during E3 2021's Summer Game Fest, and will launch on PC, PS4, and PS5 later this month. The State of Play trailer discussed free Season updates that developer Norsfell is developing, and details the classes, loot, and new boss coming with a questline in Season 1: The Wolf Saga - which will begin right at launch.

F.I.S.T. - Forged In Shadow Torch

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch, an action-packed metroidvania starring a burly rabbit in a suit that gives him massive fists which can transform into helicopter blades, drills, and more, received its September 7, 2021 release date for PS4 and PS5 during Sony's State of Play event. The game looks packed with anthropomorphic characters of all ilk in a gritty 2D world, and it can be pre-ordered now for exclusive bonus content.

Hunter's Arena: Legends

Developed and published by Mantisco, Hunter's Arena: Legends is a 30-player battle royale game focused around martial arts and swordplay as hunters and demons clash - described as "fighting game meets battle royale." However, the thing that stands out most about this trailer is it confirmed Hunter's Arena: Legends will be a free PS Plus game for August 2021, available between August 3 and September 6.

Sifu

For those looking forward to Sifu, the PlayStation-exclusive and heavily stylized kung-fu action game reminiscent of the John Wick film franchise, today's State of Play came with some bad news. Sifu is being delayed from 2021 to "early 2022," though no more distinct window is given. Luckily, the trailer should still provide a fix of action as the protagonist brawls his way through a neon-tinted club.

JETT: The Far Shore

After being announced in June 2020, Superbrothers' JETT: The Far Shore was delayed last September. Its newest trailer debuted during the July State of Play event does not confirm a release date more specific than 2021, but it offers interested players a lot of sweeping environmental shots to sink their teeth into.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles

Demon Slayer is one of the mot popular recent Shonen manga, in-part thanks to the start of its anime adaptation in 2019. Video games were sure to follow, with CyberConnect2's Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles coming out on October 15, 2021 thanks to publisher Sega. Fans got a look at one of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles' adventure mode missions playing on PS5 in today's livestream, taking them through Tsuzumi Mansion to hunt and kill demons as various characters.

Lost Judgement

Lost Judgment, a sequel to the Yakuza spin-off Judgment released in 2018, was announced in May after a handful of leaks. It will be releasing this September for last and next-gen consoles, and a new trailer provides a hearty look at various mechanics players can expect. The game is chock full of hijinks that Yakuza fans will expect, from running along walls to playing Dance, Dance, Revolution-styled minigames or attacking foes with a Shiba that growls like a lion. However, that all underpins more serious crime investigation in what seems like a perfect balancing act.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut

Sony has announced both Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding will receive Director's Cut releases on PlayStation 5, and the latter was given a full showcase for why it is "the definitive experience" with a new trailer. Beyond showing cutscenes remastered for the next-gen console, the trailer confirms that Kojima Productions is adding new battles, combat mechanics, story missions, a firing range to practice gunplay, and much more. Overall, it makes a good case for why players may want to jump into Hideo Kojima's first solo project since leaving Konami all over again.

Deathloop

A nine-minute gameplay walkthrough for Deathloop closed out the State of Play presentation, making up the largest chunk of the show as promised. Plenty of footage has been shown for Deathloop before, though this extended demo shows protagonist Colt Vahn trying to kill one of his targets, Aleksis "The Wolf" Dorsey. Viewers get a closer look at how they'll be able to use hearsay to track down their marks more efficiently, and how primary antagonist Julianna Blake can appear mid-loop to cause trouble.

The game releases September 14, and after that Arkane should be shifting focus to Redfall, a game first unveiled during the joint Microsoft and Bethesda E3 2021 conference. While this may not have been the most exciting way to end a State of Play, it's clear Sony has a lot planned for the PS5 that players can look forward to throughout 2021 and 2022.

‘Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’ benchmark is now available to download
The official benchmark is software that tests how well the game will run on your computer before the expansion launches. The benchmark uses actual maps and playable characters to assign a score to your PC and rate its performance.

A character creation tool is also included, allowing you to view a playable character as they will appear in-game. In addition, the benchmark character creation also includes the latest playable race of male Viera, allowing players to create their first bunny boy.

Square also noted that any characters that you create in the benchmark may be carried over to the full release of Endwalker.

Furthermore, the benchmark also supports a high definition 4K support (3840×2160) display as well as 5.1 channel surround sound.

If you’re interested in testing the official benchmark, you can head to the official Final Fantasy XIV website where you can download the file as well as read about how the benchmark data works.

The page also clarifies that “If your PC does not fulfil the system requirements to run the benchmark, the program will close,” and will ask you to review the aforementioned Official Benchmark Overview to determine whether your PC fulfils the system requirements.

Final Fantasy XIV recently beat its concurrent player record on Steam after World Of Warcraft streamer, Asmongold, played the game for the first time. The game hit a player count of 47,542, a huge increase on its previous record of 41,200 which was set back in June 2020.

Elsewhere, lapsed Final Fantasy XIV players can return to the game for free for a limited time – available until August 23, the campaign allows returning players to jump back in with 14 free days.
