Keeping with this month’s spotlighted company, Diablo 3, we are focusing our member spotlight on another member of that company’s commanders, the Assistant Company Commander, bdoggg.

theoldbore: Is there any story to your Fever name? Is it a name you use everywhere, or something unique to Fever?
bdoggg: Not really. Just a nickname from high school that seemed like a good tag. I use it or most of my gaming accounts.

theoldbore: When did you first get into PC gaming? Any history of playing on consoles?
bdoggg: Oh man, we always had a PC growing up, starting off with an apple II. We didn't really ever have a console until the PS 1, so in grade school I made friends with kids who had Nintendos. So a lot of PC gaming, and then it kind of switched to all console gaming in high school and kind of stayed that way until I got back into PC gaming 5 years ago or so

theoldbore: What is your history like with Diablo? Did you play the other two games? Any modded versions?
bdoggg: Didn't really play the other 2. About 5 years ago I was playing D3 couch co-op with a buddy after a night of drinking and I went out and bought the PC version a week later.

theoldbore: How did you come to be a Fever member? Do you remember who did your interview?
bdoggg: I know Entropian IRL, so he put me onto it. He even did my interview.

theoldbore: What is the best part of Fever’s Diablo 3 community?
bdoggg: The people there are the best. Game nights are a lot of fun. Lots of whiskey and sass.

theoldbore: Why should someone who has not ever played Diablo 3 before now join in and play today?
bdoggg: For a 9 year old game it's holding up pretty well. The combat in D3 is just so much fun.

theoldbore: What are some of your best memories so far in your time with Fever Clan?
bdoggg: Pretty much anytime we can give royal a hard time for killing people(usually himself) in hardcore. And this last season the hardcore D3 fever group really blew up and has been a lot of fun.

theoldbore: If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be?
bdoggg: Anyplace with a beach and good beer.

theoldbore: What hobbies do you have outside of gaming?
bdoggg: Used to read a lot, but that has dropped off since I have had kids. These days it's pickup sports(soccer/basketball/ultimate frisbee mostly), good sci-fi/fantasy/action tv/movies, and DIY projects around the house

theoldbore: What are your three favorite movies?
bdoggg: Movies, I would say the OG Star wars trilogy #1, then probably the Dark Knight and Boondock Saints

theoldbore: Do you have any advice to newer Fever members on how to get the most out of being in the Clan?
bdoggg:
Just jump into a channel and join the discussion. If they are concentrating on something in game, they will say so and no one will be offended. There are a lot of good people in this clan so get to know some of them.

What to expect from Apple’s Spring Loaded event
Surprise! It’s another Apple Event. Gone are the days of getting a few weeks’ notice before these events now that they’re entirely virtual (at least until 2022, most likely). Instead, the company just dropped the news last week.

Thankfully, there have been plenty of rumors leading up to tomorrow’s big event — and perhaps even a few hints in the invite itself. After skipping last year’s spring event, due to cresting COVID-19 numbers in the U.S., the company has grown much more comfortable dropping semi-regular livestreamed events. As ever, we’ll be covering the event as it unfolds, starting at 10AM PT/1PM ET. But here’s what we expect to see, along with the customary high-production-value sweeping-drone transitions.

The closest thing we have to a surefire bet is the arrival of new iPads, keeping in line with what looks to be a finger-drawn image on the invite. Specifically, the iPad Pro is leading the way. The high-end tablet has been rumored to be getting a refresh at some point this season, so no time like the present.

The biggest news is likely to be the addition of a mini-LED display for the 12.9-inch model (a refresh to the 11-inch is coming sometime down the road). Benefits include increased brightness, better battery life and less potential for image burn-in. The tech would arrive in the place of the OLED currently found on iPhone models.

The improved screen technology is said to add a bit of thickness to the design, which otherwise is largely unchanged. Supply constraints could ultimately put a damper on availability, so there’s a possibility that the product could be announced tomorrow, but delayed for a later date.

There’s likely to be a processor update, as well. Rumor has it that the A14X will utilize the same technology that forms the foundation of the M1 chip found on recent Macs. That could, in turn, bring a real big performance bump.

At the other end of the spectrum is the iPad mini. The 8.4-inch tablet would be getting its first major boost in two years. The updates are said to be less pronounced than on the Pro. The classic iPad design language will remain, though the device is said to be getting a performance boost courtesy of new chips. A new Apple Pencil is rumored to be on the way, as well, though details are scarce.

And could this be the event where Apple finally gives the world AirTags? All signs point to “definitely maybe.” After several delays, the company’s Tile competitor is said to finally be arriving. At the very least, the timing makes sense. After all, the company just opened up third-party “Find My” access, along with a bunch of compatible devices. That includes direct competitor, the Chipolo ONE Spot.

Also on the maybe pile is a new Apple TV featuring a Find My compatible remote. That seems like a slam dunk, as one of the most frequently lost products in history. With Apple on a two-year line-wide refresh, some new silicon Macs could be on the list. The most likely candidate? At the moment it seems to be a long-awaited refresh to the iMac line.

Overwatch Live Events Returning to China This Season
The Overwatch League has been actively monitoring the situation around the world so that we can continue to evolve our approach during the ongoing pandemic. Due to improved health and safety conditions in China, we are excited to announce the planned return of live events to three cities during the 2021 season, honoring our commitment to reintroduce offline competition while still prioritizing the safety of our players, fans, and staff.

These are the three live events scheduled to take place in China and their host teams:

  • June 4-6: Hangzhou Spark (June Joust)
  • July 9-11: Shanghai Dragons (Summer Showdown)
  • August 7-8: Guangzhou Charge (Countdown Cup)
All live events are currently planning to host fans at reduced venue capacity in order to comply with local safety requirements, which are subject to change. The five China-based teams—Hunters, Charge, Spark, Valiant, and Dragons—plan to travel to each of the events to compete onstage, while the three Korea-based teams—NYXL, Fusion, and Dynasty—are not expected to travel. Matches taking place between a China-based team and a Korea-based team will feature the Chinese team competing onstage while their opponent competes from Korea remotely on our cloud tournament server.

More details about these events, including venues and ticketing information for local fans, will be announced later by the host teams.

Barotrauma update beefs up the new player experience and monster count
Submarine survival on an alien world is Barotrauma's specialty, and its been a while since we checked in with up to 16 doomed souls cooperating upon a submarine in the alien oceans of Europa.

Thankfully, the developers are adding to the experience for new players. The upcoming Embrace the Abyss update will add contextual hints about complex stuff, more information in the—stop me if you know this one—info tab, new interactive previews for navigating the submarine, and difficulty indicators for missions. Bosses have health bars now, too!

In a big change, there's now some limited mid-round respawning for multiplayer campaigns. That's huge!

Of course, this is still a cooperative survival horror game. Like you might expect from its name, the Edge of the Abyss update also adds two new deep sea monsters to the abyss deep below the safe, cuddly upper layers. (The upper layers are neither safe nor cuddly.)

There's also new features for the campaign, like creeping radioactivity (fun!) that requires you to upgrade your sub before you move into new areas. There are also revamped side missions, and new ones, as well as abandoned outposts that have been taken over by wildlife or outlaws.

The Elder Scrolls Online will soon use in-game currency for loot box items
In the gaming space, paying for in-game loot has more or less become a familiar sight. Be it cosmetics or the more egregious loot boxes, additional payments after buying a game is one way for developers to maximize the earning potential from invested players. Thankfully, that is more often found now in mobile games and obvious cash grabs. Most games are veering away from that in favor of letting players earn their keep instead. Bethesda and ZeniMax Online Studios’ The Elder Scrolls Online is doing just that, allowing players to obtain loot box items with in-game currency instead.

This will all arrive with the upcoming Update 30 for the MMO. Planned for a June launch, players will be given daily and weekly challenges that are called Endeavors. By accomplishing these tasks, the rewards can be gold, experience, or a new in-game currency, Seals of Endeavor.

Depending on the Endeavor, you will earn varying amounts of the in-game currency.

By amassing a healthy hoard of the Seals of Endeavor, players can use them to exchange for loot box items that were previously locked behind in The Elder Scrolls Online‘s crown crates. This includes any consumables, pets, cosmetics, or even the most sought-after Radiant Apex mounts.

Obviously, the Seal value for each individual item will differ, so just make sure you have enough for what you want. The caveat is that any loot box item players acquire in The Elder Scrolls Online cannot be converted into gems.

Seals of Endeavor will also be an account-based currency, so you can save as much currency as you want.

Convenience at a glance

There will be over 60 Endeavors, with some already familiar to players. Some examples provided are the following:
  • Steal or pickpocket items
  • Complete quests
  • Defeat enemies using Class or Weapon abilities
  • Sell items to vendors
  • Craft different types of items
  • Defeat different types of monsters
  • Harvest resource nodes
Of course, that is not all there is to do. It remains to be seen just what else The Elder Scrolls Online will task players with in order to pay for the loot box of their choice.

What is even better is that it will not be a tedious process. You can start Endeavors at any point — there is no option to choose a particular one. With everything active immediately, you can get straight to the hard work. Once you have fulfilled the conditions of any of the tasks, a notification will appear and the rewards will be given to you automatically. Making players’ lives easier is always a good way to earn some brownie points.

ZeniMax Online Studios is making sure the system rewards both newcomers and veterans. No matter how you play or when you play, you will also be working towards completing Endeavors. Once the update is live, the team will also monitor things and make changes whenever necessary.

New hour-long Resident Evil Village demo comes to PC on May 2
In a livestream showcase for Resident Evil Village the other day, Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda announced that a new demo will be available at the start of May. And unlike the last demo, which was limited to the Sony PlayStation, this one will be available on consoles as well as PC and Stadia.

The new time-limited demo will let you play for 60 minutes, exploring the village or the castle we recently scoped out in the Resident Evil Village map. Or you can hit up both, though with just an hour it's going to be tough to spend enough quality time in either area.

This will be a "time-limited" demo in more ways than one. It'll only be available for 24 hours, starting on May 1 in North America and May 2 in Europe and Asia:

  • North America: May 1, 5 pm - May 2, 5 pm PDT
  • Europe: May 2, 2 am - May 3, 2 am CEST
  • Asia: May 2, 8am - May 3, 8 am HKT
PlayStation players are still getting a little exclusive via early access to the demo—they'll be able to spend 30 minutes in the village during a limited eight-hour window on April 17/18, followed by 30 minutes in the castle on April 24/25.

You can see a new trailer for Resident Evil Village, which includes a bit more face time from series hero (now villain?) Chris Redfield, in the showcase embedded above.

Sony adds $200M to its investment in Epic Games
Epic Games has another $1 billion from investors, $200 million of that from Sony, which pushes the company’s value to $28.7 billion, Epic said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Tim Sweeney, the founder and chief executive of Epic Games, said the new investment “will help accelerate our work around building connected social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and creators with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services, and the Epic Games Store.”

Sony Group Corporation’s $200 million stake follows a $250 million buy-in last summer, giving the company a larger, but still minority share of ownership in Epic Games. Sweeney remains the controlling shareholder of the company, which is not publicly traded and continues to have only one class of common stock available. Tuesday’s statement listed a dozen other investment partners and investment funds making up the remaining $800 million.

Sweeney’s comments referenced the investors’ support of Epic Games’ expanding concept of “the Metaverse,” a kind of virtual environment where people gather for shared experiences in real time. We’ve seen this take shape in Fortnite, both with the plethora of cross-overs from the Marvel Universe, The Mandalorian, and other huge pop culture properties since December, as well as in-game social gatherings like concerts and a trailer reveal for the latest Star Wars movie.

In last summer’s announcement introducing Sony as a partner, Sweeney said both companies “share a vision of real-time 3D social experiences leading to a convergence of gaming, film, and music. Together we strive to build an even more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators alike.”

Amazon has canceled its Lord of the Rings MMO game
Amazon Game Studios has canceled a Lord of the Rings online role-playing game, Bloomberg reported. The company announced the project with Leyou-owned Athlon Games back in 2019, and planned it to be a free-to-play game for PC and consoles.

The game was to be set “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe,” according to an announcement from Athlon at the time. But Leyou was acquired by Tencent Holdings in December, and an Amazon spokesperson said in an email to The Verge that the company was “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.”

The team from the LOTR project will work on other games for the company, the spokesperson added. “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.”

Since its launch in 2014, Amazon Game Studios has yet to release a successful video game, canceling some previously announced games and delaying others. Its video game adaptation of The Grand Tour in 2019 got such bad reviews that the game was pulled from storefronts. In January, Bloomberg reported that the games studio had internal problems, including a culture that didn’t provide equal opportunities to men and women, and an in-house game engine that was “painfully slow.”

But Amazon’s incoming CEO Andy Jassy said in response that he’s committed to the video games division, which launched under outgoing CEO and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is stepping down as CEO later this year. “I believe this team will get there if we stay focused on what matters most,” Jassy said.

In the meanwhile, Amazon still reportedly plans to spend a breathtaking sum on a different Lord of the Rings property: it’s said to be paying $465 million for the first season of its LotR TV show.
