T-Mobile is already shutting down its live TV service, partners with YouTube TV and Philo
Only five months after announcing its TVision streaming service, T-Mobile today shared news that TVision’s three bundles of live channels will all shut down at the end of April. The development comes as part of T-Mobile’s new partnership with Google and YouTube, which it’s making out to be a huge deal. The carrier says YouTube TV will now fill the role of its “live TV solution.” It’s also positioning Philo TV as the replacement for its base offering.

The Live, Live Plus, and Live Zone services that were available with TVision will go dark on April 29th.

T-Mobile is giving a free month of YouTube TV to customers who had signed up for one of the TVision Live packages, and all T-Mobile subscribers will be eligible to save $10 on the usual monthly rate of $64.99; so if they want the service, it’ll cost $54.99 per month. They can also get three free months of YouTube Premium. On Philo’s side, customers can also get $10 off the usual price.

“YouTube TV is a leader in this space,” T-Mobile said in today’s press release. “It offers the same great flexibility, robust content and convenience that TVision customers love.” The message is clear: T-Mobile is teaming up with a company that has been in this game longer and is already familiar with everything it takes to make streaming, watch-anywhere TV work — even if it feels like the costs keep climbing higher.

In what comes off as an attempt to sugarcoat a short-lived misstep, T-Mobile says its “TVision initiative was launched to give customers new choices and help millions cut the cord, while expanding appeal for the company’s forthcoming wireless home Internet service.” That doesn’t quite match the usual brazen “Uncarrier” tone that T-Mobile had back in October, when CEO Mike Sievert said “just like we changed wireless for good, now we’re gonna change TV for good.” At the time, T-Mobile said TVision Live was “a total game-changer for anyone who wants live news and sports.”

Sievert has now changed his tune. In a blog post today, he acknowledged that TV is better “with friends,” and went into more detail on what led to T-Mobile’s revamped approach:

This shift may surprise some given last year’s TVision streaming services launch. But innovation seldom follows a straight line. Since launching the TVision initiative, we’ve learned a lot about the TV industry, about streaming products, and of course, about TV customers. We also saw trends that made us take a fresh look at how to best do in video what we always do: put customers first. With our TV software provider encountering some financial challenges and with our broader, strategic partnerships with Google and Philo, we saw an opportunity to deliver unique value to our customers and strengthen the TVision initiative with the best partners.
This industry is incredibly fragmented, with new streaming services launching all the time, and we’ve concluded that we can add even more value to consumers’ TV choices by partnering with the best services out there, negotiating incredible streaming media deals for T-Mobile customers, and helping our customers navigate the increasingly complex streaming world.
Sievert describes the new arrangement as “a big upgrade,” adding that “YouTube TV offers more than twice as many channels as TVision Live, and Philo offers nearly twice as many channels as TVision Vibe.”

TVision Live had started at $40 / month, with Live Plus and Live Zone each increasing by another $10. As other internet TV providers know, it’s unlikely that T-Mobile would’ve been able to hang on to those lower tiers for long.

TVision Vibe — a $10-per-month service that provides on-demand access (but not live streams) to shows from AMC, Discovery, MTV, and other networks — is also being phased out. Same goes for TVision Channels, which lets customers aggregate their subscriptions from Showtime, Stars, and Epix. The TVision Hub 4K streaming dongle will remain available, and it sounds like YouTube TV will now get a prominent spot on that device.

You can look at this as a retreat on T-Mobile’s part, but I think its decision is probably the right one. YouTube TV remains the streaming TV service to beat, and there just wasn’t enough about TVision to make it stand out among YTTV and other competitors. Any price advantage was never going to last. Above all else, T-Mobile is still touting its strong 5G network advantage, as evidenced by the Magenta Max data plan it announced in late February. The plan is the only one among major carriers to lift any deprioritization limits on data usage.

LG will take part on Earth Hour
Korean electronics giant LG just announced it will be taking part in Earth Hour, a movement instigated by the WWF which seeks to help relieve our carbon footprint and show how much we care about our only (current) home. LG plans to half its carbon emissions by 2030 and is encouraging people to take part in Earth Hour with it.

"LG has joined the campaign to sympathize with the severity of climate change and strengthen its commitment to reducing carbon emissions," an LG official is reported to have said (via machine translation), "LG plans to actively respond to the strengthening of international environmental regulations in the future, as well as to develop eco-friendly products and technologies."

The movement, which started 15 years ago, will involve households and companies switching off all non-essential lights and devices for just an hour, as a way to show support, raise awareness, and help reduce carbon emissions.

Already, the WWF has gained support of countless public personalities—Greta Thunberg, the Canadian Prime Minister, and The Pope included—as well as companies such as Philips, Ikea, The Body Shop, FIFA, HSBC, and many others.

League of Legends global power rankings for March 29
It has been an intense year so far for professional League of Legends, and plenty of storylines have sprouted ahead of Upcomer’s first League of Legends global power rankings.

China’s League of Legends Pro League seems to be the deepest league, with Royal Never Give Up ending the regular season in first place ahead of many other contenders. Meanwhile, The Mid-Season Showdown is well underway in North America, DWG KIA lead the pack entering the League Champions Korea knockout stage and the League European Championship playoffs are in full swing.

Now it’s time to see how the best teams in each region stack up against each other, with the Mid-Season Invitational looming large in the distance.

Record: 16-2 (33-10 game record)

Results this week: 2-1 against KT Rolster

DWG KIA have not lost a step since their League of Legends World Championship run in 2020.

Outside of a 2-1 loss against Gen.G in Week 9 and a 2-0 series against Fredit BRION in Week 2, the first-place squad has looked immaculate against LCK competition. DWG KIA went 2-1 in the final two weeks of competition and ended the regular season with a 33-10 game record.

Mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su and jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu continued to carry the team, as the Worlds MVP in particular has thrived in the jungle carry meta. This has helped his new top laner, Kim “Khan” Dong-ha, blend seamlessly into the team mostly playing weak-side.

2. Royal Never Give Up

Record: 14-2 (29-8)

Results this week: 2-0 against LGD, 2-0 against Rare Atom

They may sport a bunch of new faces, but the same old RNG are dominating the League of Legends Pro League in stylistic fashion.

Only Li “Xiaohu” Yuan-Hao and support Shi “Ming” Sen-Ming remain of RNG’s old franchise players, but Xiaohu has changed up the entire team’s dynamic with a role-swap from mid to top lane. RNG have gone 6-0 in the last couple of weeks, including their takedown of other LPL playoff teams Top Esports and Rare Atom.

Although RNG did recently fall 2-0 to JDG, they won the last six series before that as well, making them 9-1 in the second half of the split. One of RNG’s greatest strengths is their flexibility, with Xiaohu’s mid lane experience morphing his champion pool and creating difficult puzzles for his opponents to solve in the draft phase. The rest of the team is aggressive but controlled, so RNG always brings calculated tactics to the fight, forcing their opponent to respond quickly to keep up.

3. EDward Gaming

Record: 13-3 (28-8)

Results this week: 2-0 against WE, 2-0 against Rare Atom

After a couple hiccups against top four League of Legends Pro League teams RNG and TES, EDward Gaming quickly bounced back to elite form with dominating wins against playoff teams WE and Rare Atom in the final week of the spring split.

All eyes have been on MVP candidate Park “Viper” Do-Hyeon, as he has proven during the spring split to not only be the best AD carry in the LPL, but arguably the best ADC in the world. However, EDG is deeper than just one superstar, with top lane shotcaller Li “Flandre” Xuan-Jun and consistent mid laner Lee “Scout” Ye-chan contributing plenty to the team’s success.

This team has no clear weakness, especially since Zhao “JieJie” Li-Jie erased doubts from the jungle position with high-level play all split. Only a single game separates EDG from the first seed in the LPL, and they looked poised to take that spot back in the playoffs.

4. JD Gaming

Record: 12-4 (24-9)

Results: 2-0 against OMG

JD Gaming are winners of six straight series and haven’t dropped a game since the beginning of March. Although only two of those six series came against playoff teams, one of those series came against the current top League of Legends Pro League team, RNG, with JDG dismantling the frontrunners in a 2-0 series with an average game time around 30 minutes.

Throughout March, JDG have looked unstoppable, especially in their last series against OMG where they won both games in under 30 minutes. JDG had three players on the “Team of the Week” in Week 9 of the spring split, and deservedly so; top laner Zhang “Zoom” Xing-Ran, jungler Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok and mid laner Zeng “Yagao” Qi have looked like some of the best players in the entire region during their late season run up the standings.

5. Top Esports

Record: 12-4 (25-10)

Results: 2-0 against WE, 2-0 against TT

Since rolling out of the gate with back-to-back match losses at the start of 2021, TES have only dropped two other series, both of which were against teams that made this list.

Veteran jungler Hung “Karsa” Hao-Hsuan continues to be a star performer on the team with his standout playmaking capabilities. The roster isn’t lacking for individual talent, but a recent 2-0 loss to LPL leader RNG hints that skill alone won’t be enough for TES to differentiate themselves from the other top teams.

With the tremendous Zhuo “knight” Ding on control mage duty in the mid lane for the majority of the split, TES’s other carry, Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-Bo, has pulled his own weight in the bot lane. JackeyLove currently holds the highest Creep Score Differential at 10 minutes and damage per minute out of all LPL players at 9.8 and 623 respectively, according to Oracle’s Elixir.

TES have found a style defined by aggressive jungle pressure, dominant sidelanes and a reliable mid lane star, and they’re still third place in the League of Legends Pro League. The region is just that strong.

6. T1

Record: 11-7 (27-17)

Results: 2-0 against HLE

T1 have put up steady results in the LCK since finally deciding on a consistent lineup.

With AD carry Park “Teddy” Jin-seong, mid laner Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and jungler Moon “Cuzz” Woo-chan starting since a 2-0 win against Gen.G in Week 8, T1 have been on a 4-0 series win streak and have only dropped one game. In a split that has seen multiple different lineup iterations for T1, with two debut rookies and multiple new starters in the lineup, a stable starting five may have been what the team needed in its final weeks of regular season competition.

T1 trounced the two teams below and the team above them in the standings during their late-season run, and they are the definitive dark horse in the LCK playoffs for Mid-Season Invitational qualification.

7. G2 Esports

Record: 14-4

Results: 3-2 against Schalke 04

The fact that G2 are the only Western team on this list speaks to their consistency in being the best League of Legends team Europe has ever produced.

The introduction of bot laner Martins “Rekkles” Larson to the team this offseason added an incredibly talented ADC to an already strong roster. Their first-place finish in the regular season showed that Rekkles wasted no time settling in, and the synergy many were worried about is stronger than ever.

After finishing the Spring Split as the No. 1 seed in the LEC once again, G2 kicked off their playoff run with a 3-2 win over Schalke 04 to advance to the winners bracket semifinals. Even though Schalke stretched G2 to a Game 5, it still felt like G2 were using the series as a warmup for best-of-fives to come and never really lost control of the series.

Mid laner Rasmus “Caps” Winther’s outstanding Lucian performance in the last game of that series was an interesting wrinkle G2 might bring to the table again. He dealt half of the team’s damage and had the highest kill participation on the squad. With an unlocked Caps in mid and Rekkles as ADC, it’s tough to imagine G2 not earning a ticket to Iceland for MSI after this postseason.

8. Gen.G

Record: 13-5

Results: 2-0 against DRX, 2-1 against KT Rolster

As one of the only teams to maintain their starting lineup from the 2020 world championship, Gen.G entered 2021 in a more comfortable position to contend for an LCK title. Their second-place standing reflects those expectations, and bot laners of Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk and Kim “Life” Jeong-min spent the better part of the year asserting themselves as one of the best duos in the league.

However, their over-reliance on the two stars may be holding them back from becoming a legitimate postseason threat.

Gen.G’s current spot in the standings and a recent 2-1 victory over DWG KIA prove their bot-centric style can work domestically, but they’ll need more tools in their arsenal to compete at MSI. Their topside struggles continue to stand out when compared to some of their international counterparts while the mid-jungle duo of Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong and Kim “Clid” Tae-min has looked particularly underwhelming.

With a surging T1 nipping at their heels, Gen.G’s fight to punch their ticket to Iceland is more of an uphill battle than ever before.

9. Team WE

Record: 11-5 (22-14)

Results: 0-2 against EDG, 0-2 against TES

Beyond their recent 0-4 streak against other league leaders TES and EDG, Team WE have been on fire, going 12-2 across their last 14 games. The team is mostly made up of players within their first few years of pro play, with their support, Lou “Missing” Yun-Feng, as the veteran of the squad with only four years of Tier 1 experience.

None of the Team WE players have competed in international events, either, further accentuating their inexperience and youth compared to their top-of-the-LPL counterparts. Nevertheless, the team has had a rather explosive split, outperforming other big-name teams full of veterans like Invictus Gaming, Suning Gaming and LGD. They would’ve been the sole team in second place if they had won their last two series, but their slump knocked them to sixth. If they turn it back around, Team WE could be one of the dark horse MSI contenders for the LPL. But if their two-series loss streak was rooted in something deeper, they could also flop out quickly.

10. FunPlus Phoenix

Record: 11-5 (24-11)

Results: 2-0 against BLG

It speaks to the overall strength of League’s largest and most popular region, China, that six of its teams find themselves in our inaugural global power rankings. China has continued to be not only big spenders in free agency (FPX’s Jang “Nuguri ” Ha-gwon is a prime example), but the region is also leading the pack in terms of development.

Zhou “Bo” Yang-Bo was one of those leaders, spearheading the rookie class of 2021 as FPX hummed up the standings, but an alleged match-fixing scandal has resulted in a suspension for the young jungler. Since losing the momentum they had with Bo, FPX have had their ups and downs with fellow jungle rookie Yang “Beichuan” Ling while world champion Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang is sidelined with health issues.

The overall talent is there for FPX to make a run for the Mid-Season Invitational and return to Worlds in search of their second golden star. But be it Beichaun, Tian or someone else, they need consistency in the jungle to get there.

Nmbr is coming to consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC) and has Cross play support Launching Summer 2021 #Embr

Embr, which has been available on PC and Stadia in early access since last May, is like Overcooked, but with firefighters. So yes, the stakes are higher, but hey, that’s nothing a can-do attitude can’t fix. With 4-player co-op, this promises to be an absolute hoot at your next gaming session. Make sure to check it out on PC and consoles this summer.

Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut

Lead voice actor Arielle Siegel from the new game Kathy Rain talks us through new gameplay and give us an update on the game. Set in the 90's, Kathy Rain tells the story of a strong-willed journalism major who has to come to terms with her own troubled past as she investigates the mysterious death of her recently deceased grandfather. #Kathy Rain

If you thought that the Snyder Cut was the biggest re-release of the month, then you’d… probably be right, because Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut isn’t actually out till later this year. However, the PC re-release will give the titular detective an expanded story, improved visuals, additional puzzles, and more, so brooding Batfleck has competition now.

Monster Harvest - An adorable retro throwback that has shades of Pokemon, it’s set to launch on May 13 for PC and Consoles

Drive Buy - A fast and furious multiplayer racer, this Nintendo Switch and PC arcade delight can be yours from March 31.

Dordogne - The watercolour art style of this game makes it one of the striking games of our Future Hits montage. It’s 2021 release on PC and Switch can’t come soon enough.

Fantasian - A brand new mobile JRPG from the creator of Final Fantasy, this looks like it’ll be worth nabbing from Apple Arcade the second it launches this year.
Minute of Islands - A hand-drawn adventure that looks set to captivate, this gem will land on PC and consoles in the future.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever - The rip-snorting comedy gets a VR adaption that lets you try your hand in the Zombieland. It’s also out now on PS VR, Oculus, and other PC VR platforms. And no, sadly, it doesn’t come with a free Twinkie.

Endling: Extinction is Forever - Endling puts you in the russet fur of the last fox on Earth, as you try to survive in this harsh open world that’s been ravaged by humans. Scour and scavenge in this ecologically conscious adventure when it launches on PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch this year.

Everybody Wham Wham - This delightful little narrative adventure focuses on a snowman building competition. If you want to put your snow building skills to the test, it’s out now on PC

Woodo - It’s hard not to want to reach through the screen and play with the objects in this trailer, considering just how realistic they look. Woodo might be in the early stages of development, but here’s hoping this tactile puzzler plays as good as it looks.

The Longest Road On Earth

Exclusive performance of a musical track from the game The Longest Road on Earth. A thoughtful and deeply personal narrative-title with stripped-down mechanics. The lack of dialogue or text allows you to fully immerse yourself in the chapters of four characters, each with their joys and heartache. Contains over 20 original, beautifully-sung songs. #TheLongestRoadOnEarth

This black and white story might not have speech or text, but thanks to a haunting soundtrack, this sparse adventure will aim to yank on every heartstring going. Retro pixel art only adds to the nostalgic feeling, and with a Spring launch in sight for PC and mobile, it could be your next indie obsession.

Oddworld: Soulstorm

New gameplay from Oddworld: Soulstorm with developer commentary from series creator Lorne Lanning. Oddworld: Soulstorm is an upcoming platform game developed and published by Oddworld Inhabitants for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. It will be the continuation of 2014's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! and a re-imagining of 1998's Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

Lorne Lanning joined the Future Game Show to talk us through one of the levels from the upcoming Oddworld: Soulstorm, the highly-anticipated next entry in the Oddworld series. This walkthrough gave us an idea of how you can take differing approaches to the game - do you sneak past enemies or take them out with your crafted gadgets - as well as what happens if you’re not careful with the Mudokons Abe can recruit (hint: they don’t mix well with machinery). We don’t have too long to wait to play, as it launches on PS5, PS4, and PC on April 6, with the PS5 version coming to PS Plus April 6 to May 3 2021.

Serial Cleaners

Exclusive first look at gameplay from the new game Serial Cleaners. Serial Cleaner is a story-driven, fast-paced stealth/action game, set in 1970s America. You are a professional cleaner. Your job is to clean up murder scenes by disposing of bodies, cleaning up blood stains and hiding incriminating evidence.

This ‘90s set action-puzzler returned to the Future Games Show to debut a new gameplay clip, giving us a sense of the sort of messes we’ll have to be cleaning up. And this isn’t “toddler who discovered the make-up bag” mess either, but “dead bodies that need to be put into a wood chipper” sort of deal. Fortunately, you’ll have a choice of 4 Serial Cleaners to help you turn a crime scene into… well, it’ll still be a crime scene, just without all that pesky evidence. Serial Cleaners is coming to PC and consoles later this year.

You play as an amnesiac who dive into the memories of those around you, discovering an unsettling conspiracy along the way. Experience the excitement of life as a firefighter, without the risk of burning off your lustrous eyebrows. Fire Commander is just two new intense games from MovieGames, known for their sim titles like Alaskan Truck Simulator. Expect them to bring their trademark realism to the high stakes world of the emergency services with this strategy title for PS4, PS5, Xbox and PC.

War Hospital

War Hospital is a new game from Brave Lamb studios, it is a combination of real-time strategy / economic survival games and RPG elements, which involve making morally difficult decisions. The gameplay is about managing a field hospital, treating and convalescing wounded soldiers during the drama of World War I. War Hospital is not only a computer game. It is a deep emotional experience related to the greatest and often unseen drama in the history of mankind in the world of electronic media – the First World War. The special and unique perspective of presenting this subject allows us to think of the War Hospital not only as electronic entertainment, but also as a moving experience of the real drama of ordinary and extraordinary people – soldiers fighting on the fronts of the “Great War”. #WarHospital

Another MovieGames title, this trailer gives you an idea of what it's like to be a medic on the frontline in WW1. Make choices that are literally life and death as war rages outside the tent. Do you have what it takes? Find out when the game comes to PS5, Xbox Series X and PC in 2022.

As you might have guessed from the title, the trailer for Martha is Dead was light on the rainbows and unicorns, and instead gave us a gripping glimpse of this first-person psychological thriller. You play as Julia, twin to the titular and deceased Martha, dealing with that trauma as WW2 brews in the background. Prepare for horror, mysteries, and serious emotional impact when the game launches on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC later this year.

We found out there are five assassin bosses, inspired by the elements of Chinese mythology, and that every time you die, your character ages. Outriders unlock time and day-one patch plan revealed
With the Outriders release date of April 1, 2021 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and Xbox One, developer People Can Fly took to Reddit to reveal the game’s pre-load date and unlock time as well as announce what to expect from the game’s day one patch and other post launch support. The Outriders pre-load for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One began on March 25, 2021 at 8pm IST while PS4 and PS5 pre-loads begin 48 hours before the game is out, which should be from midnight March 30, 2021 onwards. No Steam pre-load details have been detailed just yet but the developer is exploring options while Epic Games Store buyers will not be able to pre-load Outriders at all. As for unlock times, Outriders will unlock at midnight in your country for PlayStation and Xbox platforms with a single unified unlock time for PC and Stadia at 9:30pm IST on April 1, 2021. The PC release is uniform the world over due to how the stores are set up, People Can Fly say.

“This time is the standard PC release time for Square Enix and has been carefully chosen to ensure that the maximum amount of support and partner staff are on hand to deal with any launch day issues,” the developer claimed.

As for the Outriders day one patch and post-launch support, here’s what has been outlined by the studio.

“This is a patch we're hoping to have ready and integrated into pre-loading even before launch. If everything goes to plan you won’t even have to download this on Day 1, but there is a possibility that this patch will release on April 1st (day one) and will therefore require an additional download,” the developer said.

Outriders Day One Patch Notes

  • Many bug fixes and improvements, with a particular focus on the latter sections of the game.
  • Performance improvements for pacing/stuttering that was observed during the demo
  • Camera Smoothing improvements for cutscenes and dialogues. This should reduce the camera shake that some players are struggling with
  • Cutscenes/dialogues frame rate improvements
  • PC cutscenes will have the option to choose from 30, 60, 90 and 120fps
  • Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 cutscenes will be locked to 60fps
  • Xbox One and PlayStation 4 cutscenes will remain locked to 30fps

Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.2 goes live, bringing hundreds of fixes
The next major patch for Cyberpunk 2077 is now available, developer CD Projekt Red said Monday, and includes hundreds of bug fixes and gameplay changes on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. The same update will be released for the Google Stadia version of Cyberpunk 2077 later this week.

As previously announced by CD Projekt, Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.2 will address the game’s unusually fast and lethal police response times, and offer some much-needed options to driving vehicles (and getting them unstuck from the environment). According to CD Projekt Red’s extensive patch notes, the update will also fix visually amusing bugs, like NPCs moving after they’ve been killed and V’s “incorrect position while riding a motorcycle.”

The update will also address numerous crashes. CD Projekt Red says the update will address all platforms, but many crash-related fixes “make a bigger difference on last generation consoles and lower performance machines.”

Cyberpunk 2077’s second major patch, part of CD Projekt’s longterm plan to polish its highly anticipated but botched release, does not have a release date. It was expected much earlier, but was delayed due to a hack at the game developer. The first major update, patch 1.1, was released in January.

Amazon recruits 'Rainbow Six Siege' developers for its new game studio
Making games has proven to be a difficult challenge for Amazon. It has canned some projects and delayed others. But the company is seemingly in this for the long haul — it's opening a fourth development studio.

Amazon says the Montreal studio will make original AAA games. It recruited several key members of the team behind Rainbow Six Siege to lead the studio, including Luc Bouchard (head of production), Xavier Marquis (creative director), Alexandre Remy (head of product) and Romain Rimokh (content director). Amazon's clearly hoping they can repeat the success of Ubisoft's tactical shooter, which has pulled in more than 70 million players.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the studio's first project is an original online multiplayer game. Amazon hasn't revealed many details, but Marquis said in a statement the team has "the creative freedom to create a completely unique experience in the multiplayer space."

The Montreal outlet joins other studios in Seattle, Orange County and San Diego. Amazon Games has several titles in the pipeline, including New World, which is scheduled to come out in August, and a Lord of the Rings MMO.

Revisit a classic with Total War: Rome Remastered in April
The history nerds at Creative Assembly have decided to explore their own history for the next Total War, enlisting Feral Interactive to dig up the original Rome and give it a good dusting. The result is Total War: Rome Remastered, sporting a 4K upgrade, 16 new factions, and a few other modern bells and whistles.

Rome's probably the oldest Total War that's worth remastering. It was the series' first big leap, and it's the most recognisable of the original trio thanks to the 3D units and fleshed out campaign map. Even after nearly 20 years, there are plenty of common threads that run from Rome through all its successors.

"What better excuse than the 20th year of Total War to revisit a grand master?" says Rob Bartholomew, chief product officer at Creative Assembly. "The original release of Rome marks a special time for us as our first major breakout title; it's amazing to get the opportunity to remaster it with our friends at Feral."

David Stephen, Feral's managing director, describes it being "a bit like recutting the crown jewels," so the remastered edition isn't mucking around too much with the fundamentals. Diplomacy is being overhauled, however, along with the UI, camera and controls. In battle, you'll be able to use a tactical map, while the campaign will feature heat maps and icon overlays. You'll be able to rotate the camera in the campaign, and you can expect wider zoom levels throughout. When you get tired of battering the AI, you'll also be able to duke it out in cross-platform multiplayer between Windows, Mac and Linux.
