Sony raises PlayStation Vue prices by $5 a month across all tiers
Every PlayStation Vue subscriber will see a $5-per-month price increase, Sony announced today. New subscribers to Sony’s over-the-top TV service will see higher costs across all pricing tiers, meaning basic plans will rise from $45 to $50 per month. Current subscribers will start paying the higher price after July 31st. The increase comes from a recent review of what competitors are charging for content, changes in the ecosystem, and the number of services offered, according to Sony’s blog post on the announcement.
PlayStation Vue isn’t the only live TV streaming package that’s getting an increase: YouTube TV, which offers similar paid TV packages with a bundle of channels, raised its monthly fee to $50 a month (or $55 a month for those subscribed through Apple). This is due to YouTube TV adding Discovery’s network lineup (Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend) to its offerings.
Sony also added beIN Sports, alongside the upcoming NHL Network and ACC Network to its Vue packages. This means more national games from the NHL and other leagues will be available, but it also means the cost of operating a service like Vue is naturally going to increase. In this case, that’s translating to higher prices for consumers. More networks are adding their rosters to internet TV services, but there are many — like Viacom — that aren’t making the move to digital just yet, so future price increases like are certainly a possibility.
Remember all that ruckus at BlizzCon last fall about Diablo 4 supposedly being postponed? At the time, fans were angry at Blizzard for not unveiling the next chapter in the franchise, and the company had to publicly clear up the facts, saying that it never meant to unveil the game at the event in the first place. Fast forward to June 2019 and we still have no idea when Blizzard will unveil the game, but a new rumor says some employees have already seen it, right alongside Overwatch 2. Now, for the bad news: Don’t get your hopes up for a 2019 launch for any of them.
The best reason not to launch the game this year concerns hardware. Both the next-gen Xbox console and the PlayStation 5 will hit stores during the Christmas 2020 season, and Diablo fans will probably appreciate buying Diablo 4 bundled with the console of their choice.
BlizzCon 2019 kicks off on November 1st, so there’s plenty of waiting left to do before the potential Diablo 4 announcement. That would be the perfect place to unveil it, assuming 2020 really is when the game will be released.
This is all speculation based on a paragraph from a story from French-language Le Monde that focused on the current state of affairs at one of Blizzard’s offices in Paris. Specifically, Le Monde looked at Blizzard’s planned layoffs in Europe that were announced back in February. But French employees still have no clue who’s leaving the company. Some 134 people out of the 450 people who work at Blizzard’s Versailles branch will lose their jobs. Blizzard is letting go of about 800 employees around the world.
Against this backdrop, LeMonde revealed that Diablo 4 was already shown to some Blizzard teams. Here’s the paragraph in question, translated from French by Icy Veins:
Le Monde is a trusted, well-known French publication, so it’s not making things up unless the disgruntled employees it has spoken to are making stuff up themselves. All we can do is wait for BlizzCon 2019 to see whether Blizzard has anything new to announce for either Diablo or Overwatch. What about the future? Teams at Blizzard Entertainment have already been presented with the long-awaited Diablo 4 and know that a new Overwatch game is in development. But neither of these two games will be released before 2020, at the very best, and employees at Versailles have no idea if they will still be around when they eventually release. ‘Activision Blizzard will be making less of a profit, but this will still amount to a lot of profit,’ says a veteran employee.
Remedy has told GameSpot it "could bring Alan Wake to different platforms." The company went on to say it had nothing to announce at present. Original story follows.
Remedy Acquires Alan Wake Rights From Microsoft
Remedy Acquires Alan Wake Rights From Microsoft
Alan Wake developer Remedy has acquired the series' publishing rights from Microsoft. The company announced the news in a message to investors, simply stating, "The publishing rights of Alan Wake games are reverted to Remedy."
Alan Wake and its spinoff, American Nightmare, were both published by Microsoft on Xbox 360 but self-published by Remedy on PC. The developer now solely owns the rights, it seems, though it's unclear what this means for the franchise going forward. GameSpot has contacted Remedy to ask what the future holds for the series.
Despite the nine-year gap since Alan Wake's Xbox 360 launch, we do know of one project currently underway: a live-action Alan Wake television adaption is in development. The show is a collaboration between Remedy and movie production company Contradiction Films.
Remedy's next game, meanwhile, is Control, which launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 27. We saw the shooter at E3, and we think it's Remedy's most interesting game since the first Alan Wake.
A new Ni No Kuni game is in the works, Level-5 confirms
JRPG fans, rejoice: Level-5 has confirmed that a new Ni No Kuni game is in development, although details are thin on the ground.
Level-5 president Akihiro Hino revealed the news in an interview with Japanese magazine Nikkei, partly translated by Dualshockers. He didn't mention what platforms the RPG would release on, but it'd be a surprise if it didn't come to PC. Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom launched on PC last year, and the original game, Wrath of the White Witch, is being remastered for PC later this year.
We'll have to wait to find out more about Ni No Kuni 3, as it will presumably be named, but I'm already excited. Revenant Kingdom is one of the best JRPGs on PC—so said Austin in his review.
Bandai Namco has revealed Blue Protocol, a new action-RPG coming to PC.
Bandai Namco announces new PC RPG Blue Protocol
Bandai Namco announces new PC RPG Blue Protocol
Developed by Project Sky Blue - a team that comprises of both Bandai Namco Online and Bandai Namco Studios developers - the game is reportedly set in a world with "overwhelming graphics along the lines of anime movies". It will include multiplayer, "the qualities of an online game", and uses Unreal Engine 4.
"The world is on the brink of devastation, now is the time to unite," the rhyming game description says (thanks, Gematsu). "March on with friends and strangers, and defeat foes beyond your might. Travel through space and time, to change the future beyond this fight!"
Sadly, that's all we have for now - the announcement really a brief one, and Bandai have only shared a single image (see below). We don't yet know when it'll be released, but we'll update you as soon as we know more.

Sony Pictures Television Developing Final Fantasy XIV As Live-Action Series
Sony Pictures Television and production company Hivemind announced they've struck a deal with videogame developer Square Enix to bring the world of Final Fantasy XIV to the screen as a live-action series. The companies say the series is "inspired directly by the world and characters of the title's fourteenth installment" and will "embrace the bold and genre-bending sensibilities of the long-running Final Fantasy series." The announcement represents one of the boldest steps to date to bring videogame-based content to the wider media landscape, and positions the property for maximum visibility leading into the launch of the hotly-anticipated next major installment of the series, Final Fantasy XIV Shadow Bringers.
The Final Fantasy series has been a staple of the videogame industry for 30 years, with a footprint extending to all major consoles and handheld systems. The 14 titles have racked up billions in sales worldwide, in addition to massive licensing revenues from toys, games, manga, soundtracks, concerts and live events. Though the games have inspired animated series and features over the years, this will be the first live action adaptation.
Fans of the best-selling game franchise will recognize key characters and settings in the upcoming show. Filled with iconic hallmarks of the title’s mythology – magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos – the series will feature a mixture of new and familiar faces, including the live-action debut of Cid – one of the games' central characters who has appeared in almost every installment of the franchise to date.
"Final Fantasy XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience."
Hivemind, which also produces Amazon's The Expanse and the upcoming adaption of The Witcher on Netflix, will spearhead the development under the direction of Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel and Dinesh Shamdasani. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton have been commissioned to write for the series and will also serve as executive producers.
The Witcher: Netflix reveals first shots of Henry Cavill as Geralt
The Witcher is both a popular fantasy book series and a video game franchise that will soon be a TV show on Netflix. Before the series gets a big showing at San Diego Comic-Con, the company released the first shots of the characters including Superman himself, Henry Cavill. Netflix tweeted images of the main characters of its upcoming The Witcher series Monday. It also released the first poster for the show. Photos
In 2017, Netflix revealed it was developing an original series based on the novel with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, producer for Daredevil and The Defenders, as showrunner. Henry Cavill was brought in the following year to play the lead character, Geralt of Rivia.
The Witcher follows the adventures Geralt, a genetically enhanced human trained to be a monster hunter, better known as a witcher. The Last Witch was the first book featuring the character written by Andrzej Sapkowski in 1993. Polish developer CD Projekt Red adapted the novel into a video game series of the same name in 2007.
The series will premiere later in 2019. Netflix will likely share the first trailer and release date during a panel for the show at the San Diego Comic-Con in San Diego on July 19.
