Sony and Microsoft team up to develop 'game and content-streaming services'

In what may be the most unexpected team-up since Archie met The Punisher, Sony and Microsoft have announced plans to form a "strategic partnership" through which they will collaborate on the development of cloud-based technology to support their game and streaming services.

"Sony is a creative entertainment company with a solid foundation of technology. We collaborate closely with a multitude of content creators that capture the imagination of people around the world, and through our cutting-edge technology, we provide the tools to bring their dreams and vision to reality," Sony president and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement.

"For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content."

The partnership at this point is strictly a memorandum of understanding, which the companies said will enable them to explore the potential use of Microsoft's Azure datacenters to support Sony's online services, as well as joint development of new hardware and AI technology. More long-term, the announcement suggests a mix of Sony's hardware—"cutting-edge image sensors" and semiconductors—and Microsoft's Azure AI and cloud technology: "The parties will explore incorporation of Microsoft’s advanced AI platform and tools in Sony consumer products, to provide highly intuitive and user-friendly AI experiences."

"Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation. Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said.

Game consoles typically fall outside our purview but the potential impact of this partnership on gaming as a whole, through advances in streaming, AI, cloud technology, and the promise of "better development platforms for the content creator community," is enormous. Predictions of the "final console generation" have been kicking around for years—Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said last year that he thinks the next console generation will likely be the last—but this may be the biggest step yet toward making that outcome a reality.

World of Warcraft Classic: Release Date and Beta Are Here

Blizzard Entertainment announced that it was working on World of Warcraft: Classicback at BlizzCon 2017. But now that this highly anticipated expansion to the beloved PC game is right around the corner, what does this mean for recurring players and older players who want to go back to where it all began?

Whether you plan to play on your gaming laptop or desktop PC, here's everything you need to know about WoW Classic.

What is World of Warcraft: Classic?

WoW: Classic takes the open-world fantasy MMORPG back to the days before the expansions, so everything from The Burning Crusade to the Battle for Azeroth never happened. It won't be the Day 1 version necessarily, as the company is using Patch 1.12: Drums of War to build the game back up.

WoW Classic Release Date: When is it coming out?

WoW: Classic is scheduled for August 27 (technically August 26 if you're in the Americas). The soonest that you can play it is starting in May, during Blizzard's scheduled stress tests. To opt-in you must have an active subscription on your Battle.net account. If you do, go to Account Management and select the Wow Classic beta. Keep in mind, there will be level caps during the test. The schedule is as follows:

  • Stress Test 1: Wednesday May 22 - Thursday May 23
  • Stress Test 2: Wednesday June 19 - Thursday June 20
  • Stress Test 3: Thursday July 18 - Thursday July 19
On top of that, Blizzard will be opening character creation on August 13, so players with an active subscription will be able to create up to three characters per account.

How much will WoW Classic cost?

As for cost, Blizzard has said that this server option will be free as long as you have a subscription for the current game, which costs $15 a month.

What content will come to WoW Classic?

Despite using Patch 1.12, Blizzard wants to incorporate other vanilla World of Warcraft experiences, which will be released in waves. This is the current roadmap:

  • Phase 1 (Classic Launch): Molten Core, Onyxia, Maraudon
  • Phase 2: Dire Maul, Azuregos, Kazzak
  • Phase 3: Blackwing Lair, Darkmoon Faire, Darkmoon deck drops begin
  • Phase 4: Zul'Gurub, Green Dragons
  • Phase 5: Ahn’Qiraj War Effort begins, Ahn’Qiraj raids open when the war effort dictates, Dungeon loot reconfiguration (Tier 0.5 Dungeon gear, Relics, drop rates and location changes)
  • Phase 6: Naxxramas, Scourge Invasion
Kaivax, a WoW forum community manager, revealed that WoW Classic's class design, battleground mechanics and stats on existing items will be set to their 1.12 state, despite the game releasing content that expands beyond that. This removes "progressive itemization," so if the stats on a specific piece of equipment was changed during the original updates, that won't take effect in this version.

Additionally, any items that were added to a boss' loot table in Ahn'Qiraj will only appear once Ahn’Qiraj launches in phase 5.

What's the PvP content going to look like?

Blizzard will also be rolling out the PvP content within the previously mentioned phases. This is the current roadmap:

  • Phase 1 (Classic Launch): You can PvP one another in the world, but there is no tracking, and no formal rewards for doing so.
  • Phase 2: Honor System (including Dishonorable Kills), PvP Rank Rewards
  • Phase 3: Alterac Valley (version 1.12), Warsong Gulch
  • Phase 4: Arathi Basin
  • Phase 6: World PvP objectives in Silithus and Eastern Plaguelands

Overwatch's Anniversary event returns this week

Week-long free trial kicks off on Tuesday 21st May.

verwatch released on 24th May, 2016, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and Blizzard wants your help to celebrate the shooter's three-year anniversary.

Blizzard is kicking off celebrations with a week-long free trial - just in case you're not one of the 40 million players who've already signed up - as well as giving players the chance to acquire seasonal cosmetics they might have previously missed out on. Previous seasonable brawls will also be available on a daily basis, including those from last month's now closed Storm Rising event - just jump into the Arcade to access them when they go live.

Blizzard's also offering six new Legendary costumes - that's the rarest kind you can get - and three not-quite-as-rare Epic ones. There's also new dance emotes for Overwatch's latest roster additions: Ashe, Baptiste, and Wrecking Ball. You'll also get a free Legendary Loot Box if you log in during the celebration week, which guarantees you'll snag at least one Legendary item.

The festivities kick off on Tuesday 21st May and the free trial will be available until 28th May, 2019. Enjoy!

Mortal Kombat movie reboot gets a 2021 release date

Earlier this week we reported that the Mortal Kombat movie reboot is finally moving forward. The original movie was moderately successful, but its sequel was a letdown. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation flopped in 1997, and New Line Cinema put the series on hold. Warner Bros. Entertainment has been considering a reboot since 2011, and we’ve even seen leaked plot details from earlier scripts. However, no serious progress was made on the project for years. That’s finally set to change as the new Mortal Kombat enters pre-production this year in Australia. Additionally, we now have an official release date for the movie.

Warner Bros. announced that the Mortal Kombat movie reboot will hit theaters on March 5, 2021. That’s a little less than two years away. James Wan (Saw, Furious 7, Aquaman) is producing, and he’s partnering with a lesser-known writer and director. Writer Greg Russo has no major film credits, but he is also involved in the Resident Evil film reboot. Director Simon McQuoid previously created the popular PlayStation 3 “Michael” commercial. Both are lifelong video game players who hope to create an adaptation that fans will respect and enjoy.
