Sometimes it takes me a while, but every now and then I open my eyes and notice trends in my play style. Ever since the patch (Kael Patch maybe??) that implemented level 20 talents such as Nexus Frenzy and Nexus Blades I find myself more and more taking those types of things instead of the level 20 augmentation of the Heroic Ability. In an attempt to decide if I'm going about this the right way I'd thought I'd open up a discussion about level 20 talents. I also want to include that on a majority of heroes without an escape I take Blink at 20 without question (such as Nazeebo). There is also the case of Hardened Shield that is useful on some tanks (I take it on Muradin). There are a few heroes where I don't think this applies much such as Abathur, Murky, and TLV.

How do you feel about level 20 Heroic augments vs. Generic Talents?

I think the only hero I take the ultimate upgrade is gazlowe because I don't take gravity bomb, with that all being said it should be clear that I wouldn't run Gaz in Hero League above rank 40. I'm sure there are others I just cant think of them so early in the morning. My thought process go's like this:

Ranged Auto-attacker = Nexus Frenzy
Support = Storm Shield
Tank = Rewind > Hardened Shield unless I have been getting melted in teamfights
Mages & Specialists = Bolt of the Storm

I mostly follow Icy Veins builds which almost always recommend Bolt of The Storm. For ranged, burst heroes like Tychus, I find that Nexus Frenzy isn't as practical as it sounds. For a melee specialist like Gazlow, I usually just opt for the heroic augment since I usually use his ult along with a combination of skills.

I haven't played any hero league yet (just hit level 30 player level), but I also try to weigh out the team comp and attitudes. If everyone's doing their own thing, I'm more likely to go with something like Bolt of The Storm. If we're all working together, I have no problem investing more into my heroic talent.

Does the change to bolts cool down make you less likely to choose it or do you still find it incredibly powerful on all vulnerable heroes?

I agree with lavender with the exception of a few tanks.

Muradin can do very well with the decrease in stuns on him in late game team fights so he can be a bully. With his quarter second stun on hit, that allows him to really turn the tides and the added duration is an added bonus.

Johanna hands down indestructible. A second life is a great thing to have even if it's just to get away from a bad fight. Same thing goes with Uther and Redemption.

Diablo's Storm talented versions of his Hero talents are both absolutely amazing. Same with ETC and Mosh Pit. The last one that comes to mind with this is Brightwing and Blink Heal. Late game, healing is nonexistent without taking it.

Edit: Forgot about Tychus. That drill range is [email protected]#$ing insane at 20.

Does the change to bolts cool down make you less likely to choose it or do you still find it incredibly powerful on all vulnerable heroes?

My thoughts on this are the cooldown timer is almost the same as a death timer so being able to fight during the time waiting on a bolt to come back is better than waiting to rez. Being able to get away and rejoin a fight or to pursue someone can turn a team fight or even help snipe someone caught out.

In my opinion, there aren't really many heroic upgrades that are even good. And a lot of the times if you can upgrade the ult when it is good, you need to sacrifice bolt which is a huge no no.
My personal exception to this would be when you're playing Valla with Strafe, it could be acceptable to take NF instead of bolt, or even the ult upgrade. But the strafe bonus is usually only necessary with comps who lack damage.

This also comes with the exception of already listed heroes like Diablo, Gazlowe etcetc.

I don't see a reason to not take bolt on carry-oriented roles ever. That would be like your mid laner in League taking Heal/Ignite or something, you just don't. Blink is just too good to pass on. Not sure if it' still the case, but when ETC was a frequently used tank bolt would also be used on him as it allows for near unavoidable mosh pits of the ETC is quick enough.

It also is about the same as most Heroic cooldown timers (except Kael = infinite Phoenix).

I think the generic talents are in the majority of the cases, better than the heroic augment, but it's not static at all; it really varies depending on what's going on, imo.

What if they had it so that you just get the ultimate upgrade at lvl 20, and then another tier of talent choices at lvl 22 or 23?

That's a thought. At the same time they are tweaking the maps to make the game's average ~20 minutes and I think Blizz wants to stay there. Adding another level of talents would lengthen the game. Teams would hold out and soak for that last talent especially if it's Blink or Nexus Blades/Frenzy that make a big impact.
